Supporting Maternal Mental Health in December

December is often referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year.” While this may be true for some, it can also bring emotional pressure for moms. Whether you’re expecting, freshly postpartum, or dealing with young children, mothers of

all kinds may feel the weight of expectations to be the “perfect holiday mom". As much joy as the season brings, it can be hard to balance both holiday traditions and motherhood.

During this time of year, you may feel:

  • Increased anxiety

  • Overwhelmed by busy schedules, gatherings, and disrupted routines

  • Grief related to fertility struggles or pregnancy loss

  • Heightened symptoms of postpartum depression/anxiety

So, what’s the solution? Keep it simple. You should give yourself permission to slow down and simplify transitions. Take time for yourself and set healthy boundaries. Saying no to events and letting go of perfection is nothing to be ashamed of. Your mental health matters, and taking care of you should be a priority.

Caring for your well-being can be simple. We suggest:

  • Rest: Along with the madness of the holidays, the decrease in sunlight hours can throw off your sleep schedule. Rest and relaxation can be a great way to regulate your system.

  • Taking support from your community: Peers, family, neighbors, and other moms could be willing to lend a helping hand. Asking for and receiving help is nothing to be afraid of.

  • Adjusting your expectations: Things may not go according to plan, and that’s okay. Motherhood is all about adapting and overcoming. Who knows? One moment of improvisation could become a beloved holiday tradition for your family!

We tend to only see the highlights of the holidays from others, but the truth is that many others feel the same way that you do; they just don’t share it. Don’t be afraid to open up and share your honest feelings. Connecting with your community this holiday season can benefit both yourself and those around you. Join a support group, have honest conversations, and spend time with trusted individuals.

Enter the new year with self-compassion instead of pressure. Take time to reflect on the good and the bad from the past year, and consider what your energy will be devoted to in the new year.

Most importantly, though, congratulate yourself for making it this far. Managing motherhood is no easy task, and you should absolutely be proud of yourself for getting through this year!

Cheers to 2026 and all the good things coming your way. ♥️
